“The first time I purchased rams at Glenwood was 1996. I can still remember my sheep classer at the time Bill Bailey after going through a race full of young Glenwood rams, saying out loud that you wouldn’t be able to buy rams of this quality at this price anywhere in Australia. I knew then I was on a good thing.

What first attracted me to the Glenwood stud was their commercial focus. I believe they have maintained that commercial focus while now more actively marketing their sale rams.

Since that initial purchase of Glenwood rams, the Glenwood flock has progressed down the SRS® path. The sheep have been getting progressively plainer bodied, larger and better doing with a longer staple of SRS® type wool.

Been a neighbour of Glenwood I drive past their sheep at least twice a week and have observed a steady improvement. I want that improvement for my flock and that is why I continue to purchase Glenwood Rams.”

“I think that Norm’s management is an excellent example of a higly integrated approach. He has incorporated multiple aspects into his management – maintaining a stud flock and contributing to the development of lines that combine quantity and quality with innovative strategies to improve animal health and welfare at the same time as regenerating grasslands through attention to grazing management. He has monitored this systematically so that he can clearly show change in the direction he wants to go.”

“Glenwood Merinos is an outstanding example of a farm where we source our EthEco wool and this is largely due to Norm Smith and his holistic approach to the farm and land. Norm was an inspiration for our sourcing EthEco wool. His passion for the animals, the farm and land was evident and this was imparted to us. We learnt how Glenwood Merinos ceased mulesing and had not used fertilisers or pesticides for over 11 years. Norm is passionate about educating farmers as well as reaching out and developing relationships with us, who is at the other end of the supply chain. In a period of drought we saw how Norm’s farm looked healthier than neighbouring properties, and it was after this trip that we decided to exclusively source non-mulesed wool from sheep raised on holistically managed farms.”

“Norm and Pip Smith’s Glenwood Merinos at Wellington, NSW, epitomize the SRS® sheep type.  The wools are sensational.  The sheep are plain-bodied and naturally resistant to fly strike.  Mulesing has not been necessary for a long time. Fertility is exceptional with lamb marking percentages above 120%.  Body growth rate and muscling in the young sheep are genetically high and rising quickly.  The stud is driven on the genetic performance of the dams and sires with extensive breeding performance recording providing the essential information to make good breeding decisions.

I recommend highly your purchasing Merino and Poll Merino rams from Glenwood. The sheep are reared in a natural and healthy environment and have the capacity to convert Merino sheep into a highly profitable and easily managed animal.”
